PSYCHOLOGICAL FEATURES OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS’ PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY

Abstract

The study of professional identity among law enforcement officers is of particular significance in the context of modern social and psychological challenges associated with the high levels of responsibility, stress, and moral strain inherent in prosecutorial work. The article presents the results analysis of an empirical study examining the level of professional identity formation among prosecutors and identifying the psychological factors that influence its development and maintenance. The research aimed to determine the factors most closely related to the level of professional identity formation, which may act as its psychological determinants or risk predictors. Within this study, professional identity is viewed not merely as a static status but as a dynamic system of interrelated motivational, emotional, and meaning-making components that ensure the integrity of the professional “Self,” resilience to stress, and internal coherence of personality under the high social responsibility inherent in prosecutorial activity. The results showed the heterogeneity of the professional identity structure and its close connection with the motivational sphere and manifestations of emotional burnout. A mature identity is associated with intrinsic motivation, a value-based attitude toward the profession, and emotional resilience, whereas a low level of identity is accompanied by burnout and reduced professional efficiency. The findings indicate the necessity of psychological support programs developing aimed at maintaining professional identity, strengthening internal resources, and preventing emotional exhaustion among law enforcement personnel.
