PEDAGOGICAL SYSTEM OF SYLVA MAKSYMENKO IN THE CONTEXT OF THE FORMATION OF THE MODERN ODESA VOCAL SCHOOL

Abstract

The article addresses the relevant issue of interregional integration in Ukrainian vocal pedagogy. The study focuses on the pedagogical system of Sylva Maksymenko, a prominent vocal teacher from Chernivtsi, and its influence on the development of the Odesa vocal school. The author explores the mechanisms of professional tradition transmission from the Bukovinian musical environment to the Odesa operatic and academic space. The research is based on a complex of methods: historical-musicological analysis to trace the genesis of the Lviv-Chernivtsi-Odesa vector; biographical method to analyze the creative paths of performers; and pedagogical analysis of vocal methods based on archival manuscripts and personal professional experience. The theoretical framework includes the concepts of "national musical discourse" (by L. Kyianovska) and "musical language dialogue"( by O. Kozarenko). The study identifies that S. Maksymenko’s pedagogical system, rooted in the Lviv academic tradition (class of Prof. O. Darchuk), successfully adapted to the Odesa vocal environment due to its focus on "vocal hearing," anti-force singing, and the concept of the "thinking singer." It is proven that the success of her students , leading soloists of the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (D. Pavliuk, B. Panchenko, O. Prokopovych, R.Zinevych) , is a result of their strong technical foundation and stylistic versatility. A significant part of the article is dedicated to the author’s personal pedagogical reflection. Having studied under S. Maksymenko and later continuing professional training at the Odesa National Music Academy under Prof. M. Ohrenych and Assoc. Prof. E. Letiahina, the author demonstrates a synthesis of regional traditions. This synthesis combines the spiritual and ethical foundations of the Bukovinian school with the technical requirements of the Odesa vocal school. The pedagogical heritage of Sylva Maksymenko is a vital component of the modern Odesa vocal school. The integration of her students into Odesa’s cultural life confirms the vitality of her method. The study concludes that the modern Odesa vocal school is enriched by the "Bukovinian component," creating a unified artistic space within the Ukrainian operatic tradition. The practical significance of the research lies in the possibility of using these results to improve the vocal training of future opera singers and music teachers.
