CYCLE «10 UKRAINIAN CHURCH SONGS FOR THREE-VOICE GIRLS’ CHOIR WITH PIANO» ARRANGED BY MARTA KRAVTSIV-BARBASH IN THE PERFORMING PRACTICE OF A PIANIST-CONCERTMASTER

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the musical-stylistic and performance features of the cycle «10 Ukrainian Church Songs for Three-part Girls’ Choir with Piano» in the work of Marta Kravtsiv-Barabash, published in Canada. The significance of this musical edition is considered in the context of the development of Ukrainian sacred music and the activities of artists of the Ukrainian diaspora of the 20th century, aimed at preserving and popularizing the national musical tradition. The compositions of Ukrainian authors of different historical and stylistic periods are analyzed – Dmytro Bortnyansky, Fr. Ostap Nyzhankivsky, Fr. Viktor Matyuk, Fr. Yosyf Kyshakevich, Fr. Dionysius Golovetsky, Fr. Volodymyr Stekh, who were included in the mentioned collection. The characteristic features of choral presentation and the peculiarities of piano accompaniment in the works of Marta Kravtsiv-Barabash are revealed. It is found that most compositions are characterized by transparency of textural organization, reliance on cantilena melody, related to the folk song tradition, as well as third-sixth voicing, which ensures soft consonance of sound. Particular attention is paid to the role of piano accompaniment, which in many works goes beyond a purely secondary function and acquires the features of an independent textural component of musical development. The piano part is characterized by a three-plan romantic texture, octave-chord complexes, arpeggiated figurations, subvocal intonations and elements of polyphonization of musical fabric. The performance and interpretation aspects of the works are revealed, in particular, the requirements for ensemble interaction between the choir and the accompanist, differentiation of textural plans, dynamic balancing and pedalization. It is proven that Marta Kravtsiv-Barabash’s arrangements combine repertoire and pedagogical expediency with artistic expressiveness and play an important role in preserving and popularizing the Ukrainian spiritual musical heritage.
