PERFORMANCE AND THEORETICAL CONCEPT BY VALERIY POSVALYUK: A HISTORICAL AND ART HISTORY ANALYSIS

Abstract

Through the lens of historical and art history discourse, the article conceptualizes the performance and theoretical framework by Valeriy Posvalyuk (1947–2018), which served as a catalyst for the self-identification of the Ukrainian trumpet school at the turn of the eras. The author substantiates the thesis that the essence of the artist’s creative worldview lies in an indissoluble synthesis of solo artistry and intellectual reflection. Ultimately, within his own creative evolution, such an approach transformed the empirical knowledge of a practitioner into a coherent scientific and performance concept. The article identifies the doctoral dissertation defense by Valeriy Posvalyuk (2008) as a conceptual milestone in the formation of modern Ukrainian trumpet performance methodology. The study examines the approaches by Valeriy Posvalyuk to the technological components of sound production. His original method of «performance breathing» is detailed, where the anthropomorphic characteristics of the performer’s apparatus are interpreted as an autonomous pneumo-acoustic model (the «pressure tank» concept). The specificity of physical control over the air column is highlighted, particularly through techniques for stabilizing the abdominal muscles (the «pole exercise» by Valeriy Posvalyuk) to ensure timbral homogeneity of the instrument’s sound in extreme registers. The evolution of Wilhelm Jablonski’s pedagogical approaches within the creative practice by Valeriy Posvalyuk – specifically regarding the minimization of mechanical mouthpiece pressure – is demonstrated through the methodical position of conscious phonetic modeling of the airflow. It is proven that the «register compensation» rule introduced by Valeriy Posvalyuk, along with the variation of articulatory phonemes («ta»–«ti»), fundamentally changed the approach to articulation. The conclusions state that the artist’s multifaceted activity – ranging from fundamental monographs on the history of the Kyiv trumpet school to the founding of the Guild of Professional Trumpeters of Ukraine – contributed to the institutional consolidation of the national trumpet tradition. Consequently, the creative framework by Valeriy Posvalyuk should be regarded as a holistic concept of «intellectualized performance», which continues to serve as the methodological core of contemporary pedagogical practice.
