Abstract

The article proposes a multi-level typology of oxymoronic syntagms in contemporary Ukrainian poetic discourse. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing role of contrast as a leading principle of poetic text formation and by the need for a systematic description of the oxymoron not only as a stylistic figure but also as a mechanism of cognitive and axiological meaning construction. Despite the existence of substantial research on antithesis, antonymy, and poetic imagery, the typological parameters of oxymoronic syntagms, taking into account grammatical, cognitive, and interpretive factors, remain insufficiently studied. The research material consists of fragments of poetic texts by contemporary Ukrainian authors. The study applies descriptive, structural-semantic, componential, contextual, and cognitive-poetic methods of analysis. As a result, several complementary typologies are distinguished: structural-grammatical (noun + adjective, noun + noun, adverb + verb, adverb + adjective models), cognitive-domain (sensory, emotive-evaluative, spatial-existential types), classification by types of cognitive tension (conflict of properties, conflict of evaluations, conflict of experiential frames), interpretive (clarifying oxymoron, unresolved tension, reality-shifting, axiological inconsistency), and semantic-structural (contrastive, gradational, complementary with regard to word-formational relatedness). It is demonstrated that the oxymoronic syntagm is not a peripheral figure but a regular model of meaning formation in which grammatical structure, domain integration, and interpretive mode function as a unified mechanism of poetic thinking. In contemporary Ukrainian poetry, oxymoronic syntagms act as semantic nodes where cognitive, emotional, and axiological dimensions intersect. They not only represent the internal contradictions of reality but also shape a model of its perception, prompting the reader toward intensive interpretive effort and active textual reception. Prospects for further research are associated with corpus-based and psycholinguistic studies of the reception of oxymoronic constructions
