Abstract

The article delves into the problem of the linguistic picture of the world in Turkish and Ukrainian cultures, using paremia as a case study. It compiles phraseological expressions that incorporate aspects related to individuals, encompassing their everyday life, character traits, and family relationships. This study thoroughly examines the semantic nuances of these expressions within the Turkish and Ukrainian contexts. The authors elucidate the national and cultural distinctiveness of proverbs in both languages, considering the impact of extralinguistic and ethnographic factors on the translation of these phraseological units and the recipient’s language. The article proceeds to select and expound upon various translation methods, taking into account the content structure of culturally significant units, extralinguistic factors, and the conceptual metaphors in Ukrainian and Turkish. These methods encompass full analogues, non-equivalent translations, and those that share semantic similarities but rely on disparate metaphorical frameworks. Throughout the study, a comparative analysis is conducted on Turkish and Ukrainian phraseological units, with a focus on proverbs and phraseological units that feature components related to “family”, “love”, “life” “education”, and “spirituality”. The article also describes the communicative scenarios in which these linguistic units are employed and delineates the peculiarities of their translation. The article employs various research methods, including descriptive, semantic interpretation, comparative, and contrastive methods. The results of this analysis lead to the conclusion that in Turkish and Ukrainian there are phraseological units that exhibit congruence in their internal structure and expressive connotations. These are paraphrases associated with the assessment of human character traits or family and interpersonal relationships. Moreover, the analysis reveals shared and distinct semantic elements in both languages, notably in terms of paremias that shape socio-cultural, educational, instructive, and training dimensions, while considering cognitive idiosyncrasies. Differences become apparent in proverbs and phraseological units with religious content, portraying the moral and spiritual attributes of individuals and the unique worldviews inherent to both cultures.
