Abstract

The article describes complex lexical formations with the component psycho-, analyzes the features of the use of this word-formation construct, and defines its status as an affixoid. In the work, the term affixoid is understood as a word-formation formant that has the features of both root morphemes and affixes. The term element psycho- belongs to affixoid morphemes, because it has a high degree of productivity, can be used both in preposition and postposition, and has a certain lexical categorization: all terms with the component psycho- are related to the mental sphere. The material for the study included medical terms which were selected by the method of continuous sampling from modern medical explanatory dictionaries. In the work, lexemes with the component psycho- are referred to as quasi-composites, that is, lexemes that consist of several bases that cannot be expanded into units of the syntactic level (sentences or word-combinations).The article examines cases of polysemy and synonymy of medical terms with the construct psycho-, which indicates that terms, despite their own unification and limitations in use, can form new paradigmatic and syntagmatic connections, which, in turn, indicates the continuous development of the language system even in its most established manifestations. Thus, with the development of science and technology, terminology ceases to be a closed system, the formation of new terminological units must meet the challenges of the present, which requires new units to denote new phenomena of the reality, and the involvement of already well-known lexical material, which is why quasi-composition becomes the dominant way of creating new terminological lexemes. The relevance of the study is due to the important place occupied by the mastery of terminology in the training of future specialists in the medical field. The prospect of further exploration is to expand the scope of study and research of affixoids, which are productive in other branches of medicine: neurology, gynecology, gastroenterology, etc. The practical significance of the results obtained lies in their possible use in studying the educational component “Latin and basics of medical terminology.”
