PERSONAL AND SPIRITUAL QUALITIES OF A CHAPLAIN FACILITATING PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL

The article addresses the pressing issue of providing effective psychological and spiritual support to military personnel of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in the context of full-scale armed aggression. The aim of the study is to identify and analyze the key personal and spiritual characteristics that, according to the expert views of the chaplains themselves, ensure the most pronounced positive psychological impact on military personnel. To achieve this goal, a mixed quantitative-qualitative research design was applied. The empirical base consisted of the results of a survey of 53 respondents (staff military chaplains and volunteer chaplains of various denominations) who have direct experience of interpersonal interaction with military personnel in combat conditions. Data collection was carried out using an author-developed questionnaire, followed by the application of inductive content analysis of open-ended responses (extraction of semantic units) and weighted rank analysis to determine their priority. As a result of the study, nine generalized categories were empirically isolated from 265 named characteristics: "empathic listening and supportive presence" (highest rank), "spiritual maturity", "love, acceptance, and respect", "professional competence", "emotional stability", "communicativeness", "authenticity", "practical support", and "confidentiality". It was found that the first four categories form the core cluster of the most influential professional qualities. It was established that the classical conditions of therapeutic change (empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence) find specific reflection in chaplaincy service. Special attention is given to the phenomenon of "spiritual maturity", which is considered as a deep construct integrating two-dimensional authenticity: the consistency of external manifestations with the internal state and the harmonization of the inner world with religious and moral ideals. It is concluded that the process of chaplaincy support is deeply person-centered, relational, and spiritually mediated. The obtained results have practical value and can be implemented in the system of professional selection, specialized training, and advanced qualification of military chaplains
