Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of Whitney Houston’s artistic work on the development of contemporary musical culture, particularly in the field of pop vocal performance of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The relevance of this study stems from the need to understand the role of outstanding performers in shaping new vocal standards and transforming musical practices within a globalised cultural space. Despite the considerable number of studies devoted to popular music, the issue of a systematic analysis of Whitney Houston’s vocal technique and its influence on the further development of pop singing remains insufficiently explored. The aim of the research is to identify the specific features of the singer’s performance style, to determine its origins, and to establish the mechanisms of its influence on the subsequent development of pop, R&B, and soul vocal performance. The study analyses the main stages of Whitney Houston’s artistic career and reveals the key characteristics of her vocal technique, including timbral organisation of the voice, dynamic flexibility, intonational accuracy, the use of melisma, runs and riffs, as well as improvisation and variability of repetitions. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the African American musical tradition, especially gospel and soul, on the formation of Whitney Houston’s performance style, which combines technical freedom with a high level of emotional expressiveness. It is demonstrated that the singer’s work contributed to the codification of a new model of pop vocal performance, in which the voice functions not merely as a means of reproducing melody but as a primary structural element of the musical composition. The article also traces Whitney Houston’s influence on subsequent generations of performers and contemporary vocal practices, including the popularisation of melismatic singing and the formation of new standards of performance mastery. The conclusions emphasise that her artistic work has a systemic impact, encompassing both the aesthetic and pedagogical dimensions of contemporary musical culture.
