PERFORMANCE AND TEACHING OF MYKHAILO KANERSHTEIN IN THE HISTORY OF THE UKRAINIAN CONDUCTING SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT

The article highlights the main aspects of the performance and teaching of the prominent Ukrainian conductor Mykhailo Kanershtein. Based on the study of reference, scholarly and journalistic literature, archival documents, and educational and methodological works of the artist (“Conducting issues”, “On the methodology of training conductors”), the conductor’s creative life is overviewed and the stages of his versatile activity are traced. Moreover, the article identifies personal qualities manifested in the conductor’s professional communication with colleagues and students, presents the analysis of the methodical principles of the conductor’s work with the orchestra, characterizes his contribution to the development of the domestic conducting school, and outlines the directions for further research of the problem. The research methodology is based on a systematic approach, covering historical, cultural, and systemanalytic perspectives. A number of general scientific methods are used: historical (for the analysis of socio-political and general cultural processes of the Soviet era); historical and cultural (to determine artistic and aesthetic foundations of the development of Ukrainian music of this period); the method of historiographical analysis (to understand the scholarly sources); chronological (to understand the processes of Ukrainian conducting art development); descriptive (to systematize the collected material and characterize the research subject); biographical (to study Kanershtein’s creative life). The scientific novelty of the study consists in: collecting and systematizing information about Kanershtein’s life and professional activity; introducing archival documents of the artist's personal foundation to scholarly discourse; analyzing his methodical views on the conducting technique, set forth in his theoretical works; revealing his personal and professional traits; determining his contribution to the history of the Ukrainian conducting school development.
