FUNCTIONAL AND CONTENT EQUIVALENCE OF DIFFERENT STRUCTURAL SYNTACTIC UNITS IN TRANSLATED LITERARY TEXTS

Abstract

The article justifies the relevance of studying the formal-semantic relationships of different structural syntactic units in the original language and its translation. The subject of scientific observation is chosen to be metatactic (intermodel, interschematic) correlations of simple complex sentences and complex-compound sentences that have a common referential meaning. It is noted that correlational sentence structures participate in transformational processes such as folding, condensation, and reduction. It is demonstrated that asymmetric simple sentences (monopredicative in structure but polypropositional in meaning) arise in language due to processes of syntactic derivation. They necessarily include secondary formations, which in transformation may occupy the predicate position in an independent simple elementary sentence. Predicate position is ensured by onomasiological parameters of the infinitive, synthetic and analytic forms of the participial adjective, adverbial participle, deverbative, numerals with quantitative-object meaning, as well as some adjectival and prepositional-inflectional forms of the noun. They do not enter the structural scheme of the sentence but expand or complicate it. Based on translations of the same text by different translators, it is concluded that improvement in the grammatical structure of the Ukrainian language is achieved synchronously, enriching its lexical, functional, and intonation-communicative resources, indicating signs of development in literary style. It is established that the specific predicate units through which the translator accurately reproduces the author’s original text reflect the communicative priority of information and knowledge in their worldviews. The choice of simple complex or complex-compound sentences demonstrates to readers which type of relationships is relevant in a particular represented fragment of the original text. It is proven that metatactic relationships of different structural units of syntax demonstrate the dynamism of the language system. They are capable of conveying similar or close semantics through various syntactic forms, ensuring informational density of the translated text, its stylistic richness, expressiveness, and tendency towards linguistic economy.
