Abstract

The article examines the synonymic difficulties that arise in the process of translating German phraseological units into Ukrainian.Particular attention is paid to the structural and semantic features of idioms, which represent one of the main reasons for the complexity of selecting adequate equivalents in the target language. The analysis covers both fully idiomatic and partially idiomatic expressions, as well as the variability and modification of fixed word combinations, which create conditions for the emergence of several synonymous translation variants. An important aspect of the study is the consideration of pragmatic and cultural factors that influence the choice of translation strategy. Context plays a crucial role in maintaining semantic accuracy and stylistic adequacy, since idioms often carry additional emotional or cultural connotations. The comparative analysis of German and Ukrainian idioms takes into account their frequency of use, stylistic limitations, and pragmatic orientation, which makes it possible to gain a deeper understanding of the functioning of these units in different linguistic contexts.A review of contemporary studies devoted to the problems of idiomatic translation outlines promising directions for further research.Special attention is paid to the role of contextual factors in the choice of synonymous variants, as it is the context that determines the functional load of an idiom. Taking into account situational, stylistic, and genre features helps to avoid the loss of semantic richness and to preserve the authenticity of the original, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation between linguistics, cultural studies, and translation studies for achieving maximally adequate reproduction of phraseological units. Thus, the study not only broadens the understanding of the synonymic potential of German phraseology but also contributes to improving practical approaches to translation. Its results can be applied in educational practice, in the creation of bilingual dictionaries, and in further theoretical research in the field of comparative phraseology and semantics.
