The article is devoted to the study of the main criteria for distinguishing innovative compounds, which have been actively enlarging the lexicon of the English language in recent decades, and word combinations. The problem of determining the linguistic statuses of a multicomponent lexical unit and a word combination with an identical nomination remains unresolved in modern linguistics. The range of phonetic, syntactic-morphological and cognitive-pragmatic criteria for the creation, adaptation and existence of innovative compounds in speech communication and language is presented as the only reliable way of determining the linguistic status of given lexical units.
